Irvine Beach Park 7th March 2015

What started off as a miserably wet Saturday turned into a dry albeit blustery day with surprisingly unmuddy conditions underfoot.

We had a huge complement of GNAA athletes representing their secondary schools…it just proves difficult to recognise them when they are not adorned in the amber and azure racing silks of Giffnock. If you’d all just run a little slower, and wave to us as you go by …

There were well-earned individual medals for Erin Wallace (gold) and Heather Barnes (silver) plus hard-fought team medals for many of our athletes. In fact there were at least two of our sprinters seen on the podium representing their schools (well done, David Allen and Anna Rae – the distance coaches are asking if you used starting blocks?). It’s great to see the medals being shared out among club members. Giffnock Athletes featured in the Top 3 Teams in nearly every race.

As ever, the annual quest for the coveted Scottish Schools International vests and trackies could prove frustrating for some, even after brilliant performances, but we’ll only know for certain once the official letters go out – fingers crossed for everyone who’s close, and congratulations to those who do achieve those prestigious places and get to compete in Dublin at the SIAB.

Full marks for everybody for going out there and stepping up to represent your schools on a course that’s always a tough examination. Many thanks to the teachers, officials, course-setters, parents, pals and innocent bystanders who make the Schools XC the special event it is, whatever the weather.
