Friday 13th’s Evening of Endurance proved a hit with a wide variety of endurance minded athletes, coaches and parents.

Robert Hawkins presentation on the recent athletic journey for Derek and Callum was the focus for a night that celebrated many aspects of distance running.

Derek’s Marathon quest was looked at first culminating in placing top Brit at the Commonwealth Marathon. A slight pause for a raffle and refill of the glasses, just water for the athletes, and it was time to look at Callum’s road to Commonwealth athlete in the 10,000m.

Worth noting was that neither of these events were the preferred discipline for Derek or Callum.

Our own Bernie Campbell, esteemed Endurance Coach himself, carried out MC duties on the night, which was very appropriate.

Think the boys have heard this bit before!

endurance crowd

Yes, there was an audience!

The crowd were held captivated throughout, testimony to Robert’s delivery and obvious passion for endurance. It was great to see such a breadth of people from throughout the club at the event. We also had athletes and coaches in attendance who had travelled from as far as Dundee and the Isle of Bute. There were folk from East Kilbride too!

The night became a mini Endurance Expo with Scottish Athletics retail partner Run4it, Sheila’s Sporty Massage and KI Health & Wellbeing all attending, promoting their goods and services.

goody bag

Here’s what my Whole Foods goody bag looked like when I got it home.

Whole Foods donated 150 fantastic sample bags of products for the night, more than enough for everyone in attendance. Redistribution has been underway. The jury seems to be out on the Coconut Water but not the benefits!

Other great giveaways donated on the night included High-5 Gels, activbod shower gel and Biofreeze pain relieving gel. Many thanks to those companies and to Nic Urquhuart for organising these partnerships. Hopefully mutual benefits aplenty.

Money raised through ticket sales on the night will go most of the way towards funding a First Aid course for club volunteers.

The raffle went down very well during the interval, prizes donated in no particular order were:

  • Endurance Hamper – many thanks to Caroline Gibson
  • £20 voucher for the Overlee – cheers Belhaven
  • Sheila’s Sporty Massage Voucher – ta Sheila Lewis
  • Dick Wedlock 10k Entry – thanks to our own Rodger McEleney
  • Rouken Glen 10k Entry – thanks to Giffnock North of course
  • Great Edinburgh Run 10m Relay Entry – much thanks to Great Run
  • £30 voucher for Run4it – great thanks to Run4it for their support
    high-5

High-5 Gels went down very well with the Endurance crowd

    biofreeze

These pain relieving gels could prove a recovery staple and First Aid Kit essential.

bill

Bill is keeping his activbod for after his Masters appearance for Ireland in Triathlon. I’m sure he will shower before then!
