A sun-kissed day in mid-June brought 68 teams from all over Scotland to the green surroundings of Dam Park in Ayr to participate and enjoy the Summer Outdoor U12 Superteams. Giffnock North had six teams of young athletes that competed well (with some notable performances) and contributed to what was a rewarding day for all involved in Junior Athletics in Scotland.
Giffnock’s three teams in both boys’ and girls’ competitions all delivered some fine displays.
Competition commenced at 10am with the first track event, the 75m. This saw the girls from Giffnock North (Girls C) acquiring 34 pts notably with Catriona Bentley performing well with 12.75sec contributing a healthy 10 point start for her team. At the same time Giffnock North (Boys A) started their day strongly at Turbo Javelin acquiring 48 pts with Charley Houston and Johnny Carrick achieving 14pts each both with good 14metre throws. Giffnock’s (Boys C) group were simultaneously getting started in the Long Jump pit with a good 40 points to open their day. Scott McMillan and Matthew Murphy both delivered 12 points each with identical jumps of 3.21m.
Giffnock (BoysB) dug out a decent 35 points at Long Jump next with Euan Thompson jumping very well to make the best score for his team with 11 points. The first relays of the day then began with Giffnock (Girls A) squad producing a scintillating display of running. A good first leg from Ela McGregor left Angelika Mayer tearing up the track to enhance the time with a brilliant back straight leg. Imogen Maher ran a terrific last bend to hand the baton to a lively Isla Scott who brought the team home in 61.68 secs and 200 points.
Giffnock (Girls B) didn’t actually get started until 11.45 at Long Jump due to the lengthy timetable achieving 42 points with Skye Moulson jumping best with 3.25m (12pts).

Next round of events brought Giffnock North (Boys A) to the track with all four team members winning their heats and acquiring a very strong 61 points with Liam Duggan, Daniel Martin and Johnnie Carrick all sub 12secs with Charley Houston only marginally outside.

The (Boys B) team then again performed strongly over 75m with Oliver Ngouajio , Euan Thompson, Rocco Fugaccia and Cal Cumberland all running strongly with sub 13sec secs heats earning 41points.
The Boys C squad next found themselves at Turbo Javelin with Scott McMillan producing a tremendous 15.09m effort for a very healthy 15points and the team achieving 46 points.
The next 4x100m relay involved the (Girls C) squad where they achieved a good 70.16 secs and 169 points.

The Girl’s A squad then followed up their brilliant relay with arguably some even better long jumping. Angelika Mayer (3.87m) , Imogen Maher (3.75) , Isla Scott (3.58m) Ela McGregor( 3.19m) achieving a superb total team score of 61 points.
Boys C squad then acquired another 30points with a steady display in the 75m all achieving 13sec times. Eddie McDonald had the best time with 13.07secs.
After a lunchbeak the programme restarted with Girls B in the Javelin. Olivia Overend produced the best in the Pool with hefty 13.02m throw earning 12points and the team gaining 32points.
Boys A squad next had a solid, strong performance in the 4x100m relay which produced a really exciting race with a close finish. The whole team ran very strongly especially Johnny Carrick who almost caught Airdrie Harriers on the line and missed a win by 16 hundredths of a sec after being 2 or 3m down at the last changeover. A better changeover between the first and second leg runners could have easily brought the team a better result and time but overall a good performance. 60.82 sec (202 points).

Boys B were next for the 4×100 producing a good time of 64.76 and 193 points.
Rocco Hickey Fugaccia (BoysB) 4x100m relay.
Girls B reported promptly to the track for the 75m. A further 41 points earned with all girls producing 12sec runs. Skye Moulson being fastest with 12.18 secs earning 13 points.
A 4x100m for the Boys C squad was a tough test as they were up against strong A squads in their heat in Pool1 with Inverclyde, Ayr Seaforth and Shettleston all showing their strengths. A solid 67.65 sec team effort gained them 185 points.
Girls C earned 26 points in the Long Jump next before Girls A were on the track with their 75m. A strong score was earned with good runs in all their heats especially Angelika Mayer who scored a whopping 19 points with an 11.43sec time.
Boys A had their last event at Long Jump and again did well with a good team score. Daniel Martin produced a lengthy 3.58m which was best in the pool an earned 15 points for his team . The overall score was 47 points.
Girls C rounded off with Javelin and earned 27 points and Girls B relay earned 191 points with 65.58 sec time.
To summarize Giffnock North had a very rewarding experience and enjoyable day. There was slight disappointment for the Boys A squad in that they made the podium in 3rd place on the day but were subsequently demoted to 4th after some scores were revised.
Both A squads did do particularly well on the day with the Boys A achieving 358 points and the Girls A team getting 338 points. Scoring the most points for their teams on the day with consistent performances were Daniel Martin (Boys A -42 points) and Angelika Mayer (Girls A – 44 points).
