It was a very wet and windy start at Grangemouth yesterday the venue for the First lower age group YDL match of the season. So much for summer athletics it was more like winter. Nevertheless there were some fine performances throughout the team, which consisted of a lot of first years. First up were the hurdlers who got us off to a great start with a 2nd and 3rd from U15’s Calum Alexander and Andrew Conlan. Reuben Nairne won the U13B’s 75m hurdles and was ably backed up by debutant Adam Ingles who finished 3rd in the B event. Not to be outdone Freya Menzies & Lauren Saxby finished 3rd in the U15 girls 75mh and Sophie Inglis & Rachel Callan were 3rd & 4th in the under 13 girls hurdles. Meanwhile Eve Donaghy broke the U15 girls hammer club with her first ever competition in the event with a fine throw of 19.15m.

The U15 boys Conlan & Alexander did well in the HJ with a 3rd & 1st B and not to be outdone the U13 boys of Nairne and Murray Fotheringham finished 2nd & 1st B. Ollie Maher was 2nd 7.56 m in the U13 boys shot and another debutant Euan Menzies was 4th B. Next up it was the turn of the sprinters in the 200m’s and there were some steady performances throughout with a couple of wins from Reuben Nairne in the U13 boys 200m A string and Eve Blues in the U13 girls 150m B string. This lead us onto the 800m races and the highlight’s here were two second places by Jamie Sturrock in the U17 A race and Annabel Ballantyne in the U15 girls B race. Continuing with the High jump it was the turn of the U17 Men Ethan Dear & Alessandro Schenenni who finished 1st & 2nd respectively.

Next up on the track was the 100m series with wins from Amy Donaghy U17 women, Robert Brady U15 boys, Max McHarg U13 boys and a couple of second places from Alyson Bell & Sophie Ingles in the U13 girls 75m’s In the 1500m’s there were hard fought 2nds for the U13 boys Murray Fotheringham & Harris Patterson & U15 girls Heather Barnes & Lynne McKenna plus Jamie Sturrock in the U17men B string. Isla Ward went one place better in the U13 girls 1200m where she won the B string.

The final individual track event was the 300m’s and we had one 1st in Amin Hifi in the U15 boys 300m B & 3 x 2nd places by Robert Brady U15 boys A, Freya Menzies & Orla Lang in the U15 girls A & B events. In the relays the U13 boys were 1st and the U13 girls 2nd as were the U15 boys & U17 Women.

In the field Robert Brady U15 was 1st B in the long jump and in the U15 girls Emma Barbour was 2nd A string & Lauren Saxby 1st B. Emma was also 2nd A in the HJ and Freya Menzies finished 1st B. The U13 also performed well in the high jump with a 3rd from Niamh Flockhart and a 2nd in the B string from Rachel Callan.

All in all a great start and we ended up finishing second to Edinburgh 39 points adrift but we did miss a few events so if we can get everyone out we should be able to push them all the way in the final.

Thanks goes to all the coaches, officials and parents who helped out on the day.
