Report by Craig Fotheringham

There was a feeling of Déjà vu at the second day of the Scottish Schools Athletics Championships, sponsored by Rotary, with all our Gold Medal winners from yesterday appearing again today on top of the podium.
A new face on the podium was Alessandro Schenini who continued his great run of form with a superb series of jumps and a Gold Medal in the Over 16 Boys Long Jump with a new Championship Best Performance with 7.31 Metres. This is the 2nd for Alessandro.
Collecting their second Gold Medals for the Under 16 Boys were Reuben Nairne, making a welcome return to 60 Meter Hurdles and hard on his heels Murray Fotheringham with victory in the High Jump. Murray had a go at The Championship Record attempting 1.91 but just failed by the narrowest of margins. Also in the High Jump, Emma Barbour collected Silver in the Over 16 Girls with a height of 1.60M and Rachel Callan jumped in the Under 16 Girls competition.
Our Gold medal sprinters from yesterday then returned to collect their second Golds of the Championships – Adam Clayton winning the Over 16 Boys 60M in 7.05 and Alyson Bell the Under 16 Girls 60M in 7.91.
Also having a run in the hurdles were Sophie Inglis who made the Under 16 Girls final, Lauren Saxby, Iona Denholm and Grace Robertson. Other sprinters in action over 60 Meters were Max Mcharg who made the final of the Under 16 Boys, Andy Moses and Kyle McLean who both narrowly missed out on the final of the Over 16 Boys, Freya Cowan, Eve Donaghy and Niamh Smith.
Amine Hifi claimed 5th place in the Over 16 Boys 400M in a time of 51.44. Our Under 16 Girls 300 Meter runners were Eva Blues, Rosie McKay, Anna Young and Emma Gaston. Freya Menzies and Rhea Campbell ran in then the Over 16 Girls 300 with Rhea reaching the final. Adam Deverill claimed 5th in the Under 16 Boys 300M.
The harsh realities of qualification in Scottish Schools events was made clear in the 800M with only the fastest 8 making the finals – winning your heat was no guarantee of progression! In the over 16 Boys, Nikolai Gajic, Ben Shaw, Calum Young, Lewis Mitchell and Eoghan O’Donnell all tried but failed. Nikolai qualified for the B Final but was not feeling 100% and did not run.
Kate Richardson, Miriam Gilbride, Abby Thomson, Isla Scott and Emma Chamberlain all then tried to qualify for the Under 16 Girls Final with only Kate making the final where she finished near the back of the field in a very similar time to her heat.
The under 16 Boys then attempted the qualification process – Murray Fotheringham, Ethan Carolan, Jacob Luc, Harris Paterson and Ross O’Brian gave it their best with Murray making the final and Ethan and Jacob qualifying for the B Final. Murray tracked the leaders in the final before sweeping past with 100M to go and claiming a third Gold Medal in a time of 2:03.04.
Again, no Giffnock Vests on show and no official results published yet so apologies for any errors or omissions. Well done to everyone who participated and to the hard working officials who made the event run so smoothly.
