Festival of Running Report

The 26th Giffnock North Festival of Running took place on Thursday 7th June which was a gloriously sunny day, well almost. This year’s event included 1k fun runs for primary school age children and the introduction of a new 2.5k event ,”To the Pond & Beyond” (I can hear Buzz Lightyear shouting it now !) This event is for Secondary School age children representing their school, the School with the most finishers being award £500 to go to the charity of their choice. Lastly, the big event, the Rouken Glen 10k, run in and around the glorious Rouken Glen Park.

In attendance at this year’s Festival were two of Giffnock’s Great Britain Internationals, Erin Wallace and Luke Traynor, many thanks to them for presenting prizes and giving encouragement to all the youngsters.

Primary School 1k Fun Runs
The winners in the 1k Fun Run were Katy Donnelly for Shawlands Primary in the girls, run and Calan Chong for Mearns Primary in the boys run.

To the Pond and & Beyond
In the 2.5k “To the Pond & Beyond” the Girls race was won by Hannah Ryding (St Ninians) in a time of 09.06 minutes. In second place, also from St Ninians, was Kate Paul in 10.03. Third place went to Miriam Gilbride (Mearns Castle) in 10.35.

The boy’s race was a much closer affair with Aaron McGillivray (St Ninians) finishing first in a time of 09.28, second was Matthew Donegan, (Lourdes Secondary) in 09.38. Third was Adam Chamberlain of Williamwood High School in 09.41.

Both boys and Girls team prizes went to St Ninians HS .
St NInians also won the £500 charity prize for the most finishers.

Giffnock North AC Rouken Glen 10k
To cool the runners off, the Rouken Glen 10k started in light rain, but fortunately didn’t last long.
First across the line was Iain Reid (V35) of Cambuslang Harriers, who is no stranger to this race, having won it three times now, his time 32.54. In second place was Jack Arnold (Sen) of Bellahouston Harriers in 33.18. Third was Andy Bonner (Sen) of Giffnock North AC in 34.58.

First lady to cross the line, for the second year in a row, was Ruth Fraser-Moodie of Springburn Harriers.  Ruth finished in 25th place in a time of 39.10.  Second was Skye Dick  in 27th place, time 39.20.  Third place went to Giffnock North athlete Jill Smylie in 39.29 in 30th place.
First over 50 man to finish was Ted Gourley (Giffnock North) in 13th place in a time of 37.52. First over 50 lady was Angel Carson (Bellahouston Harriers) who clocked a time of 46.44 .
In the under 20 category, Rhona Mowat was first lady to finish in 37th place in a time of 40.03. For the men Alastair McKenzie was first under 20 home in 45.29.
