GIFFNOCK NORTH AC enjoyed a hot day’s racing over a freezing cross country course at Irvine Royal Academy last Saturday, at the West District Championships.
GB Hill Running Champion Lynn McKenna led from gun to tape in heading team mates Clare Wallace, Charlotte McKenna and Rhona Mowatt to a remarkable 1-2-3-4 and the Under 17 team crown. Jennifer Murray took a strong fourth in the U15s 4k race, backed by Jill Carswell and Francesca Davidson for team gold, while Hannah Ryding won silver in the Under 13’s two-miler, with Isla Scott and Kate Paul helping clinch the team gold.
Master Ladies Allie Chong, Sheila Lewis and Li Wang took their club’s fourth team title late in the day, to add to a stellar occasion for Giffnock’s female contingent.
Giffnock’s U13 boys claimed team bronze as Reuben Macdonald impressively won the 3.2 event, backed by Hugh Shiels and Aaron McGillivray. The Under 15s landed team silver, with Ethan Carolan third individual and Harris Paterson and Jacob Luc also impressing over 4k. The U17s had to make do with team fourth, with Calum Young first back in sixth individual place.
Under 20s Nikolai Gajic, Nicholas Boyle and Jordan Orr came home with a solid team bronze after 8k of racing, while Giffnock’s Senior Men, led by Dave Sawyer, earned a seventh place finish over 10 demanding kilometres.
With overall entries bigger than ever and the sport enjoying a boom, this was an impressive display from the southsiders’ cross squads, who can anticipate a significant call up from their ranks for the prestigious Inter District races in Edinburgh in January.
