Scottish Indoor Superteams Competition
Sunday January 22nd.
“ Indoor Superteams event took place at the Emirates Arena bringing athletic teams from all across Scotland to compete. Giffnock North entered 6 teams, 3 boys teams and 3 girls teams – all team members compete in four events: the shot putt, long jump, 60m and 4x200m relay. All the Giffnock athletes gave their best performances , pouring their hearts and soul into the different events over the day.
The Girls A team (Poppy McWilliams, Katie Heron, Lauren Belland, Eilidh Brown), performed consistently well across all events winning their 4×200 relay heat in an impressive 2.05.21- the fastest of the day. Poppy McWilliams started the relay off for Team A, making it back first and creating a strong foundation for the others to deliver an overall excellent team performance. The consistency continued in the 60m race with all girls coming first in their respective heats. Poppy said the highlight of her day, “was achieving a new PB in the 60m”.
The Girls B team (Ruby McWilliams, Chloe Simpson, Carmen Sheridan and Bernice Adakamola ) were equally strong, pushing all the way in their 60m heats to deliver outstanding performances. Bernice Adakamola won her heat with a truly graceful finish and later said “it was a clear highlight of her day”. The Giffnock girls continued to impress with the performance of Girls C Team ( Freya Mearns, Abbie Gallagher, Anna MacFarlane, Aurora MacIntyre), who won their 4×200 m relay by 50m and to a huge round of applause. Freya Mearns started the relay off with a fast lap placing the C team in a strong position- her effort was sustained by all other team members and their combined effort saw them win their heat. Abbie Gallagher, of the Girls C team, said “the highlight of her day was winning the relay race”.
The overall results for the Girls Superteams competition saw Kilmarnock claiming 3rd place, Springburn C Team coming in 2nd and the Giffnock Girls A team claiming the title of ‘Superteams Girls Champions’ in overall 1st place, bringing home the gold medals and the trophy. They were truly delighted with their win.
The Boys teams did not disappoint with some truly energetic, consistent, and fierce performances across all events. The Boys A team
(Campbell Miller, Andrew Mitchell, Hugo Stewart and Finlay Hamilton) performed very strongly in the field events with some boys obtaining great new pb’s in the shot putt. It was also an outstanding relay performance with the team winning their heat race by some 50 metres with Finlay
Hamilton pushing to the very end to sustain their leading distance.
he Boys B team (Oliver Hamilton, Zac Hollyman, Evan Tyler and Davi Birnie) won their relay in 2.08.52 in a fiercely fast heat with strong and consistent performances from each athlete across all events. The Boys C team ( Cian Lough, Andrew Church, Calvin Thomson and Christopher Cameron) also delivered a consistent performance across in all events and achieved a strong second
place finish in their relay heat.
The overall Boys Superteams results saw more Giffnock colours on the podium. The Giffnock Boys A team took 3rd place, just pipped by
Springburn in 2nd place and the Central team taking 1st place.
Throughout the day the Giffnock teams demonstrated great sports etiquette, supporting and cheering each other on with amazing energy, if only you
could bottle it and sell it!
A huge thank you goes to Coaches John Shedden & Mark Hamilton & all the parent helpers who chaperoned each team, making sure they warmed up and were in the right place at the right time to compete, and to Orla Lang for keeping everyone organised. Lastly, a big thanks to all the parents who came along to support Team Giffnock, it really made a difference.”
