Giffnock North on the Road again. Friday September 8th travelling to Ullapool to catch the Ferry and returning on Sunday 10th Sept
For the 2nd time this year, [following a very successful trip to Gothenburg for the European Youth Games in July] the club is now heading north for the 3rd time to the Tri-club Invitation event on the Island of Lewis where we compete at the invitation of the local Stornoway Club [SRAC] and on this occasion with Central AC, Livingston and North Uist.
We were called in as a late replacement in mid July. At short notice, we decided that this was a competition opportunity we could not afford to turn down as it has been such a successful outing on the last two occasions. The benefits for our athletes , getting a chance to travel with the team and experience the competition in Stornoway can’t be overstated .Even although the organisation is a bit easier to manage than it was the first time round, it requires considerable input and effort and the dedication of our coaches and some of our officials who are giving up a full weekend to make the journey .
We also have always benefited from the input of our own Doleen Galbraith ,Official,ex -athlete , ex-Island Games Medallist and a native of Lewis who has supported the club with her local knowledge and contacts on each occasion .
A great debt of gratitude and appreciation to our band of coaches Sara Lang, Symon Lipp,Jim Coyle, Billy Glasgow and Jackie Alexander organising and co-ordinating.Thanks also to Colin Saxby ,Club Trustee and Official for his assistance.
Jackie advises that there will be a live video stream on this occasion for the competition on the Saturday and she will keep us posted about that.
Between that and Colin’s twitter updates (between officiating duties) we should get good reporting from Lewis .
One of the highlights of the trip is the hospitality always shown by Stornoway Harriers who for once in the year don’t have to travel to events and who ensure the Athletes have a great time at the Ceilidh on the Saturday night and fantastic home baking at the meet.
Sara Lang adds she believes “there will be over 200 athletes in total. We have waterproofs , travel sickness tablets, apples, bananas by the boxful all ready to go and 35 super fit athletes! ”
Good luck to all our Athletes,Coaches, Officials and Supporters for a successful outing from all at the club
