Masters XC at Kilmarnock

Respectable medal haul at Scottish Masters XC

Dean Park in Kilmarnock was the venue for the 2018 Scottish Veteran Harriers National XC Championships on Saturday. The course was a challenging one, with plenty of mud, steep hills up and down and a fallen tree to jump into the bargain – real XC stuff!

The women (and men over 65) ran 2 loops over a distance of 6K and acquitted themselves well. Allie Chong was 7th female finisher and took silver in the W45 age group, with Sheila Lewis in 15th position, and Mary McCutcheon only seconds behind in 16th.

Stephanie Lillie and Jatinder Sumal combined with Allie Chong to take the bronze team medal in the W40 age group, and Sheila Lewis and Mary McCutcheon were ably supported by Catriona Gourley in the W50 category to take silver. This ensured that every female GN runner went home with a medal!

The younger men competed over 8k.Giffnock’s first man across the line was Ted Gourley in 45th place after a fantastic run, taking silver in the M55 age group. Jason Steele ran strongly to finish 53rd. Just behind were Luke Chamberlain and Scott Wilson, who ran the whole race inches apart to come in 70th and 71st respectively. Mark Sutherland completed the M40 team, who placed 9th overall. Michael Hampson ran bravely after a difficult week to finish in a time of 39.25.

Without a doubt a tough day at the races, but plenty of smiles through the mud and a respectable number of jangling medals headed back up the M77. Well run GN vets!
