WHAT DO WE DO AND WHY
Multi events training is an extension of the under 11 programme of athletics where all athletes are encouraged to take part in the many events available to us in this sport. We aim to develop skill, co ordination and ability in each area. For now, we are largely an under 13 squad, but we are starting to see more of our athletes remain with the multi event group into 1st and even 2nd year U15, which has been very rewarding. Whilst we hope that athletes retain a multi event approach, we certainly do not hold athletes back when they have particular preferences and their interests may be best served elsewhere within the club.
WHAT ELSE DO WE DO AT MULTI EVENTS?
On a Monday we focus on SPRINTING and a FIELD event. Sprinting and the development of SPEED is essential in ANY athletic event, or sport. The development of speed sessions was helped by one of our Senior Sprint Coaches, Anne Stewart and this will continue as our athletes move through the age groups. We have a particular focus on Sprint Hurdles during the fairer weather months and Middle Distance comes more to the fore during the winter months. The field events are run on the basis of 3 sessions in a block as follows;
- Back to basis,
- Develop the skill / technique,
- Competition / Trials.
In this way we reinforce what we learnt in the last block, develop another skill and then test progress.
The Friday sessions are designed to develop SPEED ENDURANCE, CORE STRENGTH and CONDITIONING. Our track work focuses on longer distances which will build on the base we have been creating on a Wednesday, or indeed Sunday if the athletes attend the sessions at Rouken Glen. In the GYM we work on CORE with circuit and gymnastic circuits. We alternate this every 4 weeks with HIGH JUMP, working to the same 3 session blocks as per a Monday. We try to finish off with a game if we have enough time to aid cool down.
WHEN AND WHERE DO WE TRAIN
- Monday – 6:15pm to 7:45pm – Eastwood High School Track
- Wednesday – We also recommend a 20 to 30 minute base building run for first year under 13’s and above, to be done as and when able but a Wednesday suits the multi events programme.
