SUPERteams @ Kilmarnock

The club entered 6 Teams at the National Superteams Competition at Kilmarnock yesterday Saturday the 18th June . This competition has a multi event formula designed to encourage skills development across Running,Jumping and Throwing.

The Superteams competition has athletes from across Scotland in the Under 12 age group completing 4 athletics events – a run, a jump, a throw and a relay – to score points for their club in a bid to become the SUPERteams Champions. Athletes compete in teams of 4 girls or boys. Points are scored in each of the individual events to combine for the  team total.

In the summer,  normally its Long Jump ,Turbo Javelin and 75M as well as 4x100m Relay. In the winter the competition is normally held at the Emirates and the programme is Shot putt , Long Jump, 60m and 4x 200m relay.

We have a good record of achievement at this competition but we didn’t quite match it this time round despite all our athletes performing well and turning in outstanding performances. Sadly, we also suffered from illness and Covid withdrawals on this occasion which affected our Boys A team.

Our Boys B team of Austin Summerhill, Evan Tyler, Logan McNulty and Paul Rolfe rose to the occasion and climbed the Podium in Bronze position with solid performances overall and outstanding prowess in the Long Jump to finish.

“We did well coming from behind to achieve 3rd ? place- says Austin “
“It was a really exciting day. I got a PB in long jump that I am proud of and I was glad to be with my amazing team mates”

Giffnock Boys C team [All U11s ] recorded 16th out of nearly 30 teams

Our Girls A Team finished in 6th position, Girls B in 10th spot and our C team in 13th Place out of 37 Team.

Well done all our athletes who ran, jumped and threw all day in mostly very windy and intermittently cold and then bright sunny conditions.

The Multi event format of this competition is a great idea . We need more specialist throwers and jumpers at Giffnock North to add to the High Jump & Long Jump set up provided by John Davie & Finlay Weir and also the development of a Multi events Coaching approach which Jim Coyle is working on .

Grateful thanks to Colin Mearns for the excellent photos , Rachel Callan and Caroline MacConnell our Coach/ Athletes who gave up their whole day to support the Superteams athletes . Thanks also to Team Managers Karen Brown and Catriona Dick and Mark Hamilton and to all the officials at Kilmarnock including our own GNAC Patricia Gallagher & Craig Armstrong .
Special mention to Karen who helped with Tent transport and to Croy, Dudley, Jack Wallace, Glen Griffiths and his dad Gareth who helped us get the Tents sorted at GHA on Friday.
