Report from Ryan McAllister
On Sunday 4 September, the upper age group Youth Development League (YDL) final took place at Bedford stadium. Eight teams had made the final, with two Scottish teams in the mix; Team Glasgow and Team Edinburgh.
Team Glasgow, a composite team, included many Giffnock North representatives. The team, managed by John Melvin, was captained by two Giffnock North athletes; Niamh Grahame and Andrew Hunter.
The medals haul started with Giffnock’s Sophie Haldane, winning the 300m hurdles in fine style and setting the tone for what would be a successful day for Team Glasgow. As the day progressed, it was clear that Team Glasgow had brought a team with a positive attitude, ready to compete with the best that the UK had to offer. The team, singing in the stands, supported each and every athlete cheering them on to medals, personal best performances and seasons best performances.
Notable performances came from Erin Wallace medalling in three events with two golds and a silver, Sophie Haldane with a gold and two silver, Niamh Grahame charging down the home straight to take gold in the 400m, Alessandro Schenini once again winning his long jump.
The day was capped off with some excellent relay performances, with Giffnock North having a large presence in each relay and coming away with four out of the eight total medals available in the relays.
As the day came to a close, it was announced that Team Glasgow has placed a very admirable fourth in the competition, much to everyone’s delight. Whilst the team may not have won the competition, the atmosphere that they brought to the competition, along with their enthusiasm was remarked on by all other team managers showing what a credit the young athletes are to the sport and their club.
The club could not agree more. Thanks again to Ryan , Jackie and other coaches who made the long trip and also to John Melvin for his unwavering commitment to Team Glasgow and facilitating higher claim competition including our athletes .
