YOUNG ATHLETES ROAD RACES

RUNNING ON SUNSHINE, that was our Junior Endurance squads at East Fortune in the National Road Race Championships, in unseasonably warm conditions.

First to grace podium with a solid gold effort were U13 Girls Emma Nicholson, Emma Birrell and Chloe Simpson, 34 points to EK’s 34. Their male counterparts Evan Tyler, Sam Deery and Chris Cameron were squeezed into bronze medal position with 33 points, behind Perth (26) and Edinburgh (32).

April MacAuley’s hard-fought second place led home Holly Simpson (4th) and Eilidh Caldow (8th) for a convincing title victory ahead of Lasswade (31 points). Next up was our individual champion of the day, Louie Muir, coming out on top in a highly competitive finish over 4K. Max Deery 6th and Cameron Nugent 12th were edged for the crown only by Falkirk Victoria, one point in it, their 18 to our 19. A closer-run race was yet to come, though.

Erin Reilly was the sole flag-flyer for GN in the Girls U17 5k, but unfortunately she succumbed to the heat and had to step off the course, after a strong start. Get well soon, Erin!

Final event was the U17 Men and what an effort they put into their 5k. Alasdair Maclean, Calum Dick and Aaron Reid settled into a sizeable lead pack, with Matthew Hill in support, before the second circuit surges kicked in. Alasdair contended the top places but had to settle for fourth; Calum fought into seventh and Aaron took 17th. Then the totals came in … same as Garscube! 28 points each, Garscube get the nod on third finisher. Ouch. But the lads can be proud of a memorable day’s racing and their team medals.

Thank you the tent wranglers, mums, dads, support crews, officials and stewards. Now, where’s the sun block?
