Anne Stewart officially hangs up the stopwatch after an incredible 40+ years coaching and officiating for Giffnock North AC. Thank you from everyone at Giffnock North AC for everything you have done for the club. We wish you the happiest of retirements.
“Hi Everyone
My first words are an apology and thanks.
As you know I retired from officiating at our Club Championships in September. I thought my leaving the club would follow immediately, but that was not to be. I therefore am sorry that I never thanked everyone for their kindness that day, both wishing me happy birthday (All day) and presenting me with an enormous bouquet, an even more enormous cake and an envelope with an enormous amount of money. Just too generous from all of you. It took my breath away, and I was speechless and humbled by your kindness, and yes, I know it was Clare who organised it all. Many many thanks.
So this is a second letter of thanks to all of you.
On Thursday evening, I finally hung up my watch and whistle, and disposed of my session plans. I also gave Craig F all my old coach and official jackets I have accumulated over the years. Perhaps someone can get use of them(even for a short while).
It felt strange driving away from the Emirates, thinking, I will only ever return here as a visitor.
I feel that I need to thank a lot of people, who made my journey as a coach and official a very happy one.
Some of you will know that I started as a helper. I accompanied my hubby Alan to x/c and road races. He had just joined GN and did not know what to expect. I kept all the discarded clothing, either on me or in a black bag, for the GN athletes to retrieve at the finish line. I got to know every one of them, and they all made me feel welcome.
That welcoming feeling has never changed within the club and I pray it always continues.

I have been privileged to work with some special athletes, coaches and officials. YOU know who you are!! Too many to mention individually. However I need to thank a few by name.
Charlie McKie, who encouraged me to become a coach. Bernie Campbell who Tutored me and built my confidence to teach athletes my way. Alan my hubby who supported me taking on officiating and Tutoring for SA which took a lot more of my time, and less for the family. Clare Stevenson, who from the moment she arrived at the club, became my friend. We have worked together over the years within a partnership that some of you will have with colleagues. It is special. Over the years, Clare has put me forward for 2 awards, and I have been lucky to receive both – A lifetime Achievement from East Renfrewshire Council and an Honorary Membership of Scottish Athletics. She has a way with words methinks. Will someone please put Clare forward for every award going, as she deserves it. Neil Hutchison who carried my training group when my health kept me away last year, and is now their lead coach. Well done Neil.
Finally my thanks to all the athletes that have been in my orbit over 40 years. I am especially thankful to those of you who continue to keep in contact. Please don’t stop now. I will look forward to hearing from you, more than ever.
Kindest regards
Anne”
