The British Indoor Track & Field Championships took place at the weekend (26th-27th Feb.) with a number of Giffnock athletes making the journey south.
Many congratulations to high jumper David Smith who took a Gold medal along with Kelechi Aguocha, both athletes clearing 2.13m
In the 1500m, both Women’s and Men’s events were slow affairs. In the women’s final Erin Wallace ,who had hit the front on the final bend, was overhauled in the last 30m by Adelle Tracey of Guildford & Godalming and had to settle for Silver.Erin’s time was 4:14.72.
The men’s 1500m final was run in a similar pattern, Neil Gourley went to the front with 400m to go and held off the oppostion right to the death, but was overtaken on the line by Piers Copeland. Many congratulations to Neil on his silver medal, his time was 3:49.13.
Both Erin And Neil have had their performances rewarded by inclusion in the British team for the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, 18th-20th March.
The Men’s long jump had two Giffnock athletes competing, Alessandro Schenini and Murray Fotheringham. Alessandro’s best effotrt was 7.31m which put him in 7th place. Murray Fotheringham pulled out a last jump leap of 7.46m which overtook his fellow scot Alan Hamilton (Edinburgh) to secure the Silver Medal. The event was won by Samuael Khogali of Woodford Green, jumping 7.54m.
In the men’s 400m, Kyle Alexander progressed to the semi-finals but his time of 48.46 was not good enough to make the final.
So, a Gold and three SIlver Medals at the British Indoor Championships. I think this is our best ever result at a major senior championships ?
