Track and Field Season off and running (and jumping, throwing and hurdling)

Giffnock North’s athletes have been competing in the first two Track and Field League matches of the outdoor season. On Sunday 8th April we were at Crownpoint Arena, Glasgow for the Central and Southern Scotland Athletic League (CSSAL) Match 1 and then on Sunday 13th April we were at Kilmarnock for the Scottish National Athletic League (SNAL) Match 1. As both events are Leagues, athletes were competing for points for their clubs.

The CSSAL involves the whole club with events in every age group from under-11s to Masters. The weather was kind to us and a few pbs were achieved as well as a couple of first-time performers. The results service at CSSAL has been radically improved this season. Gone are the days of results being printed and blue-tacked to the wall long after events have complete. In CSSAL match 1 the organisers provided us with online results that were being updated regularly throughout the event. You can review the results for yourself by clicking here. Highlights of the day include our very robust post-transplant and post heart-attack masters Rebecca Seaton and Angela Kelly respectively and first-time competitor Gabriel Mulherne in the U17 High Jump. A big thank you to Coach Neil Hutchison in his first outing as Giffnock’s Overall CSSAL Team Manager.

SNAL is a league competition for u17, u20 and Seniors from across Scotland. Like the CSSAL, athletes are running for club points. It differs from CSSAL by organising the heats in PB order, regardless of age group, making every heat competitive among similar ability athletes and encouraging PB performances. Where Crownpoint was sun-drenched and warm, Kilmarnock had the odd peek of sunshine and bitterly cold. Lucy McGhie reported that she was frozen the whole way round her 800m! But despite the cold there were still some great performances. The results service at Kilmarnock was working on hyper-drive, with times and positions being posted online almost as soon as each event finished. Well done to the officials. Full results are available here.

At the time of writing the League Points positions were still awaited. This will be published once available.

Thanks to all out athletes, officials, coaches and supporters for making these events possible.

The next CSSAL match is Sunday 1st June at Kilmarnock and SNAL is Sunday 18th May in Aberdeen. Look-out for emails inviting athletes to sign-up for these events.
